Bio

“A lifelong creative returning to the quiet beauty of drawing and painting.”

Nigel Bailey is a Sydney-based contemporary painter, draftsman and photographer whose work explores architecture, atmosphere, memory and the emotional qualities of light. Drawing inspiration from both Australian and European environments, his paintings focus on urban spaces, transitional landscapes and quiet interior moments, using compressed geometry, tonal restraint and cinematic shadow to evoke psychological stillness and ambiguity.

Originally trained in Typography and Graphic Communication at Reading University in the United Kingdom, Bailey has worked internationally for more than four decades as a graphic designer, creative director, educator and consultant across the UK, Europe and Australia. His extensive background in visual communication continues to inform the compositional structure and visual discipline of his art practice.

In recent years Bailey has returned to painting with renewed focus, developing a cohesive body of contemporary realist work centred on atmosphere, silence and the emotional resonance of ordinary places. His paintings and drawings investigate the relationship between observation and memory, balancing realism with omission and abstraction.

Bailey’s work has recently received recognition through finalist selections in Australian art prizes and inclusion in curated international online collections. He continues to maintain an active studio practice in Sydney.
